Basenji Dog Breed Profile


The Basenji is a very affectionate, yet demanding breed of dog. This breed of dog is highly energetic, projecting a very curious personality, thus because of this, they need a very patient owner. This breed of dog love to chew on things, so they need lots of chew toys to keep them occupied. This breed of dog does not like water or wet weather, and they are known to clean themselves like a cat! These dogs are not good with pets that are not dogs.

Family/Child Friendly

This breed of dog have lots of patience most of the time. To be safe, though, they only need to be around older, well behaved children, not young children, due to the fact they don’t like to have their ears and tails pulled.

Lifespan and Weight

The average lifespan of a Basenji is around 15 years. However, with the advancement of veterinary medicine, pets have been known to live up to 20 years and even longer. The average weight of this breed of dog is around 21 to 24 lbs.

The most common diseases associated with this breed are PRA, which can lead to kidney failure if not treated.

Housebreaking and Shedding

These dogs shed very little due to the fact they have very little to no hair at all. They wash themselves like a cat, but they are better off as an outside dog, as they are highly energetic.

Due to their high energy and destructive tendencies, these dogs are not recommended for the apartment or condo environment. Due to the fact that they need and crave human attention at all times, they are not recommended for the frequent traveler. Noise Factor

This breed of dog have a yodel type bark. They will become neurotic and bark all the time if they are ignored.
