The American Water Spaniel is a very willing to please breed of dog. Its friendly, intelligent disposition makes it the perfect pet for nearly anyone. Its fiercely protective of its owner, and can be trained to play tug of war. Unspayed females have a mind of their own when in heat, even when they are trained, so its best to spay as soon as possible.

Family/Child Friendly

This breed of dog is very family friendly. American Water Spaniels are protective of their owners and consider the children as litter mates until they grow up. They are very loving and attentive dogs, perfect for the nuclear family.

Lifespan and Weight

The average lifespan for this breed of dog is around 12 to 15 years. However, with the advancement of veterinary medicine, pets have been known to live up to 20 years or longer. The average weight for this breed of dog is around 25 to 45 lbs.

Common Diseases

As lovable and protective as this breed of dog is, its not without their fair share of health problems. Some of the problems attributed to American Water Spaniels include, but are not limited to cardiac abnormalities, canine hip dysplasia, diabetes, allergies, hypothyroidism, follicular dystrophy, epilepsy, and cataracts.

Housebreaking and Shedding Factor

This breed of dog needs brushing around once per week. Bathe as needed. Housebreaking is difficult if not impossible with this breed of dog, as they do have stubborn strong willed tendencies. This breed of dog is an average shedder, so use a fine bristle brush when brushing and it should be more than adequate.

Best Owner Compatibility

This breed of dog is not suited for the apartment or condo dweller. Nor is this breed suited for the frequent traveler, as this breed of dog requires a lot of human interaction and attention. The best owner would be in a rural environment with a big yard to romp and play in with an owner willing to give this dog lots of love and attention at all times. These dogs can be very clingy dogs. Failure to give this breed its human interaction will result in neurotic and destructive behavior.
